The Vienna Hofburg Orchestra conducts magnificent classical concerts of the highest musical quality in the most beautiful concert halls in Vienna. The historical halls of Vienna’s Imperial Palace (Hofburg) shine in new splendor when the most famous masterpieces of Mozart, Lehár and Strauss are performed by the internationally renowned Vienna Hofburg Orchestra. 

The Vienna Hofburg Orchestra was founded in 1971 by the Austrian conductor Gert Hofbauer. Their original aim was to promote waltz and operetta music and bring it to the world. Today the ensemble of the famous Vienna Hofburg Orchestra consists of over 40 talented musicians who are accompanied by internationally renowned opera singers and classical ballet from Vienna’s opera houses. Visitors can expect a programme full of variety from the Viennese classical period; from waltz and operetta music to opera arias, all the fantastic classical melodies are represented. Since 2017, Giuseppe Montesano has been the musical director of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra.

Concerts of Vienna Hofburg Orchestra take place regularly from May to October, starting from 20:30 pm and ending at 22:00 ( individual dates may vary).

Special concert dates at Christmas and New Year’s Eve round off the programme.

Depending on the concert date, Vienna Hofburg Orchestra performs in several beautiful venues: in the Ceremonial Hall or Festive Hall of the Vienna Hofburg (Imperial Palace), in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna’S Konzerthaus, in the Brahms Hall of the Musikverein, or in the Hercules Hall of the Gartenpalais Liechtenstein.

The renowned Vienna Konzerthaus has also a long history to look back on, from its first planning in 1890 as a house for music festivals to its very important role after the Second World War as part of the renewal of Austrian musical life. The Konzerthaus soon established itself as one of the leading organizers of contemporary and traditional music in Austria with its unique atmosphere and wide range of musical programs.

The Mozartsaal (Mozart Hall), with its 704 seats,  enjoys a worldwide reputation for its unique acoustics.

Concerts in the Ceremonial Hall, Hofburg Palace

The Zeremoniensaal (ceremonial hall) or The Habsburg Throne Room embodies, of course, royal majesty. It was built in the classical style from 1802 to 1806 under Emperor Franz I by the court architect Ludwig Montoyer and was the throne room until the end of monarchy. 

In 1810 in the ame hall,  Napoleon asked Marie Louise, the Emperor’s daughter, for her hand in marriage. 

The 26 double chandeliers of crystal glass illuminate festive gala banquets, celebratory balls and elegant congresses. The Zeremoniensaal is framed by the 24 surrounding Corinthian pillars in stucco lustro.

Concerts in the Festive Hall, Hofburg Palace

The Zeremoniensaal (ceremonial hall) also accommodated court concerts and balls. Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth held grand gala evenings such as the “Ball bei Hof “(Court Ball) to which only the Royal Household and high aristocracy were admitted.

The large Festsaal (festival hall) was designed as a new throne room. Construction began under Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1908 and was completed in 1923. The Festsaal is the largest hall in the Hofburg with almost 1.000 m2.

The impressive imperial ambience is created for events of spectacular style, especially concerts and balls. The room meets the highest standards, features a large permanent stage and integrated interpreter booths. The latest sound and lighting technology ensure unimpaired visual and acoustic clarity.

Concerts in the Hercules Hall, Liechtenstein Garden Palace

The Hercules Hall is the festival hall of the Liechtenstein Palace. The most impressive architectural feature is the magnificent ceiling fresco “Taking Hercules into Olympus” by Andrea Pozzo which is still originally preserved till today. 

Every year the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra plays its traditional New Year’s concert and New Year’s Eve concert in this exclusive atmosphere.

 To Wiener Konzerthaus, Lothringerstraße 20, 1030 Vienna: Take the metro U4 until Stadtpark station; or take one of the tram lines D, 2 or 71 until you 'll have reached the station Schwarzenbergplatz. From there it is only a few minutes' walk to the Vienna Konzerthaus.

 To the Vienna Hofburg Palace (Festival Hall and Ceremonial Hall), Heldenplatz 1, 1010 Vienna: take one of the tram lines 1, D, 2 or 71 until you 'll have reached the station Burgring or Dr. Karl Renner Ring. From there it is only a few minutes' walk to the Vienna Hofburg via the Heldenplatz entrance.

 To Liechtenstein Garden Palace, Fürstengasse 1, 1090 Vienna: Take one of the tram lines D or 1 until you’ll have reached the station Bauernfeldplatz. From there it is only a few minutes' walk to the Garten Palais Liechtenstein.
